Trekking - Pin Valley

Pin Valley is most beautiful and adventurous, because of the 4810 Mt high Pin Parvati Pass which separates the Pin from the Parvati valley. The trek starts at Manikaran in Parvati valley and takes you over to Pin valley. On the way you find a rich fauna and flora with flowers and spices as well as fossil rich rocks. Be prepared to enter the land of the ibex and snow leopard.

Region: Parvati and Spiti valley
Season: Mid July to September
Duration: 13 Days
  • DAY 1: MANALI - MANIKARAN (1700 Mt)
Drive to Manikaran, 85 km from Manali by jeep or bus. Stay in a hotel at Manikaran and enjoy the famous natural hot springs.

  • DAY 2: MANIKARAN - PULGA (2100 Mt)
Walk uphill on a motorable natural road through cliffs and old villages besides river Parvati. Camp near village Pulga.

  • DAY 3: PULGA - KHIRGANGA (2960 Mt)
Today's trek leads through hilly terrain along dry rocks of Parvati river. Camp at Khirganga on open meadows.

  • DAY 4: KHIRGANGA - TUNDABHOJ (3200 Mt)
The trail crosses several delightful pastures with a variety of wild flowers in summer. Camp at Tundabhoj, with view of waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs on the opposite side of the valley.

  • DAY 5: TUNDABJOJ - THAKURKAN (3400 Mt)
Initially you will be crossing rocks and dense vegetation. After a few tiring kilometers, the trail descends to the riverbank. The next section up the valley poses some difficulties, as the trail frequently skirts rockfaces. Camp at Thakurkan above the cliff section of the valley.

  • DAY 6: THAKURKAN - MANTALAI LAKE (4070 Mt)
The trail passes a side river by a natural rock bridge. Just above this crossing is the Pandu bridge, another natural rock bridge over the Parvati river. Then the trail ascends gradually through a series of flower meadows. Camp at a grassy campsite near Mantalai lake.

  • DAY 7: MANTALAI LAKE
    Leisure day at Mantalai lake.

  • DAY 8: MANTALAI LAKE - BASE OF PIN-PARVATI PASS (4550 Mt)
Your trek passes the boulders of the Pin Parvati glacier and allows a full view of Parvati valley and its surrounding peaks. You camp at a sandy ground near the base of Pin-Parvati Pass. (The campsite is under snow until mid of July.)

  • DAY 9: BASE OF PIN-PARVATI PASS - PIN-PARVATI PASS (4810 Mt) - PIN VALLEY CAMP
Today's trek leads you up to Pin-Parvati Pass over several snowfields. (You should use a rope, especially early in the season when the crevasses are hidden.) The pass provides a magnificent view of snow capped mountain ranges. The descent from the pass is gradual, leads over snow fields and becomes steep at some places. Your camp is at a grassy spot of land.

  • DAY 10: PIN VALLEY CAMP - TIAL (3900 Mt)
There is no trail for the first few kilometers of today's walk. You have to march on loose scree and cross some rivulets. The camp is again situated on a grassy spot of land.

  • DAY 11: TIAL - MUD (3600 Mt)
Today's trail is well defined. The village of Mud can be seen beneath a huge cliff face from above. The campsite of Mud lies just outside the village.

  • DAY 12: MUD - SANGAM (3500 Mt) - KAZA (3600 Mt)
From Sangam there is a daily bus service to Kaza (the chief lieu of Spiti valley) where you stay at a hotel.
