Many myths surround hills. As such, hills mean many things to
many people. The immense potential of the Himalayan hills was
only recognised recently.
Himachal Pradesh is rich in sub-hum zones, lying at an altitude
of 650 to 1800 meters. These hilly areas form the state's most
important and productive agricultural zones.
Cereals like maize, wheat and paddy occupy currently the largest
part of the cultivated area but vegetables and fruits have made
a major impact too, as they provide far better economic return
compared to cereals.
