Students gaining knowledge under professional guidance of efficient teachers in the shade of the pipal tree. This is a common sight in any part of the valley. Thanks to the H. P. Compulsory Primary Education Act 1997, which came into force w.e.f. 1-4-1997. This act has surely brought about an educational revolution in the valley.

All the schools are affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education. The schools have been classified as primary, middle, high and senior secondary. The medium of teaching in these schools is Hindi. In order to seek admission to the primary school an application along with the birth certificate is to be submitted to the principal of the school. The minimum age required for the admission is five years.

Kullu district now has a widespread network of 958 government-operated schools out of which there are 698 primary schools, 86 middle schools,102 high schools and 36 senior secondary schools.

All the government schools charge nominal fees, whereas the tuition fee for the girls is excused. The schools offer subjects of English, Hindi, Science and Social sciences as compulsory subjects whereas, a choice is given in the study of Sanskrit, Urdu, Economics, Drawing, Home Science and Music. Students from 6th to 10th classes are subject to this facility. Computer education is also optional to the students of 9th to 12th with a small additional amount of Rupees every month. Students are given choice of choosing their stream i.e. science, commerce or arts in class eleventh.

The annual examinations of fifth, eighth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth are conducted by the board whereas for the other classes the school authorities themselves conduct the exams. The government aims at both mental and physical development of the children and thus provides various sports and extra curricular activities in the schools. Highly qualified teachers, who prepare the students to come up to the expectations of all, impart the education. Scholarships are also forwarded to students who gain a percentage of more than 60% in tenth class. A number of other scholarships are also awarded through various schemes implemented by the state government to promote the education in the Valley.
