The British rule in India has brought us from the gurukuls (a school) of 200 B. C., the ancient Bhuddist viharas, the medieval maktabs and madarsas to present day modern system of education. After independence a large number of people were floundering in the darkness of ignorance, but today 52% of the population is literate. The current figure of literacy in Kullu is 73.36%. In the past, Matriculation level was considered to be a sufficient qualification for the people of the valley but today the level of education has raised to acquiring a Master's degree.

The number of graduates from the Himachal Pradesh University's two government colleges at Kullu district is increasing every year. These colleges are situated at Kullu and Banjar.

Govt. Post Graduate College Kullu
This College offers graduation in Bachelor of Arts, Science and Commerce & Master of Arts (English), Tourism & Travels. One eligible candidate can seek admission from 1st July to 10th July. Govt. College Banjar Distt. Kullu
This College offers graduation in Bachelor of Arts in English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Geography, Economy, Pol. Science & History. An eligible candidate can seek admission from 22nd June to 30th July. Hostel facility is also available with this college and is situated at Banjar, Kullu (H.P).
